Book Cover Series
Richard Ford
Role: Editorial Design, Typography, Book Design
Tools: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop
For this project, we designed a series of book covers for Richard Ford’s trilogy featuring Frank Bascombe: The Sportswriter, Independence Day, and Be Mine. These novels explore themes of loss, alienation, fatherhood, and the search for meaning in American suburban life. After researching, I focused on Frank’s emotional journey through grief, aging, and family complexities. My initial designs were too literal, so I shifted to a more abstract approach using vectorized imagery like the typewriter and scoreboard for The Sportswriter, a disheveled American flag for Independence Day, and highway street lines for Be Mine.
The series maintains a cohesive style that visually connects the covers while representing Frank’s evolving life stages. By emphasizing symbolism over literal interpretation, I aimed to reflect the novels’ introspective tone and thematic depth. These covers would stand together as a unified trilogy.
